Chinese tourists shift their preferences for destinations in the third quarter of 2019

According to COTRI Analytics, in Macau, the increase in Chinese arrivals went down to 10% YoY after more than 20% for each of the first two quarters of 2019, while Hong Kong suffered a decrease of 28% in arrivals this time. Traditional tourist attractions in Asia, which Chinese mostly visit such as Singapore, Japan, and South Korea, did not profit as much from the disturbances in Hong Kong as could have been expected.
However, this is perfect timing for the small countries to attract the “Second Wave” of Chinese travelers looking for new spots. Bosnia & Hercegovina, Serbia, Georgia, and Romania achieved impressive growth, albeit from a low base.
