COTRI Director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt served as the moderator for a presentation on the topic of “How Chinese demands and innovations change the global tourism industry” at the annual London instalment of the WTM fair on Monday 5th November, 2018.
The presentation – which served as the first ever to take place in the fair’s new Asia Inspiration Zone – saw Prof. Arlt joined by representatives from Ctrip Customized Travel and TTD (Things to Do) platforms, as well as high-profile speakers from UnionPay and Huizuche to discuss current trends and developments in the Chinese outbound tourism market and the role that technological innovation will have on continuing to drive these changes in 2019.
Opening the session, Prof. Arlt provided an overview of six contemporary trends in the Chinese outbound tourism market, touching on topics including demographic diversification, visa liberalisation and the growth in direct flight connections with China.
Introducing the international audience to the unparalleled ecosystem of China’s online travel agencies, Ctrip Customized Travel CEO Kane Xu outlined the platform’s empowering of the emerging ‘modular’ semi-FIT market, while Charles Liu, Europe director of Ctrip TTD discussed the company’s increasing internationalisation as it continues to grow in offering multilingual one-stop cross-sell products across the Ctrip and Trip.com platforms.
Yi Liu, co-founder and Chief Business Officer at car rental start-up Huizuche discussed the increased opportunities enabled by car rental services, as they empower travellers to seek out more independent options when overseas.
Speaker Jeremy Abbott, UnionPay’s Head of UK & Ireland, spoke of his company’s future plans to roll out its mobile payment service, contending that the advancement will see UnionPay directly challenge other market competitors, drawing upon its vast existing network of contracts with retailers.
The day also saw two further China-related presentations in the Asia Inspiration Zone; the WTCF World Tourism Cities Federation held a “Market Research Report on Chinese Outbound Tourist (City) Consumption (2017-2018)”, while COTRI partners Capela China and Dragon Trail Interactive featured in a talk on the topic of tapping into the potential of Chinese social media.
