COTRI Director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt quoted in China Daily UK

China Daily UK’s March 5th, 2018 article ‘China keeps resorts in the fast lane’ has included quotes provided by COTRI Director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt.

Published as the international sporting world slowly starts to turn its attention towards the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, following the conclusion of the Pyeongchang games on February 25th, 2018, the article examines the development of winter sports activities in the Chinese outbound tourism market.

Discussing the potential that the growing number of Chinese skiing enthusiasts bring to the global market, Prof. Arlt suggests that “…for ski destinations to grow, new markets have to be found,” before furthering: “[hence], it is natural for operators to court the Chinese market.” He furthers that Switzerland is currently the leading market among European destinations.

Highlighting the fact that Chinese skiers in Europe typically made use of travel operators to book such trips, albeit without travelling as part of package tours he added:  “A minority is traveling fully independent, including Chinese living temporarily in Europe, who may have more opportunities to learn how to ski than Chinese in China.”
