As has been established as somewhat of an annual tradition, COTRI Director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt has had an article on the topic of Chinese outbound tourism published in the German-speaking ChinaContact magazine, the “leading German-language business magazine on China”.
The new piece, entitled “Tourismusjahre für mehr Wettbewerb” (Tourism Years for more competition), explores the topic of Chinese Tourism Years and the factors that can contribute to their success, or lack thereof.
The article goes on to examine 2018’s three major China Tourism Years as case studies for such events as a whole. It goes on to explain that this year will see bilateral Chinese tourism years in Canada, Turkey and the European Union take place and discuss the circumstances surrounding each event.
The 2018 Canada-China Year of Tourism, for example, is strongly committed to bi-directional travel and is notably looking to target overseas Chinese residing in Canada. The 2018 Turkey Tourism Year in China, on the other hand, is focused heavily on increasing Chinese visitors to Turkey following the drop off in arrival numbers in 2016. The EU-China Tourism Year, however, while nominally reciprocal, has suffered from a number of missteps from the European side and has not seen the introduction of many significant events that would not have already taken place regardless.
