The article “German towns count on ‘red tourists’ from China”, published on May 14, 2017 by Nikkei Asian Review has recognised the work of COTRI China Outbound Tourism Research Institute in the development of international “red tourism” attractions as a means of boosting engagement with Chinese outbound tourists.
The article cites COTRI’s collaboration with the Engels House in Wuppertal, Germany, a former residence of 19th Century thinker Friedrich Engels, which is looking to capitalise on an influx of interest from Chinese outbound tourists.
With the article highlighting the issue that much work still needs to be done to draw Chinese tourists to such historically significant “red” tourism destinations, it gives the example of COTRI developing a specialised tour itinerary built around Hainan Airlines’ flight schedule that take Chinese travellers to relevant attractions in a number of cities across Europe.
With the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx taking place next year and Friedrich Engels’ bicentennial being marked two years later in 2020, various European destinations and tourism attractions – including the former residences of both men – are currently making concerted efforts to develop their products as a means of capitalising on the increased interest among Chinese travellers looking to visit attractions related to historical figures they know from their own education. Accordingly, destinations with links to historical figures well-known among Chinese are well-placed to also benefit from increased interest if they are able to market their product appropriately.
COTRI China Outbound Tourism Research Institute provides expert insights into the worldwide developments of China’s outbound tourism market. As Chinese outbound tourists are travelling to a large range of destinations, our publications cover a number of regions, providing detailed insights and analysing visitor behaviour.
With COTRI’s insights you can forge a successful business strategy built upon in-depth market expertise, comprehensive qualitative analysis and future projections.
