New Forbes Blog Posted by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt: “Airports Around The World Keen On Getting More Connections To China”

COTRI Director Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Georg Arlt’s latest article: “Airports Around The World Keen On Getting More Connections To China”, published on his Forbes Blog on Wednesday, September 29, 2016 discusses the increase in Chinese inbound tourism in the destinations with direct flights from and towards China.

Starting with the example of Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province and the host city of 2016’s ROUTES conference, Prof. Arlt makes the point that direct flight connections play a major role in facilitating the development of certain cities, as well as bringing about temporary increases in arrivals. However, achieving sustainable growth is more a result of product adaptation, careful preservation of one’s brand image and implementing appropriate policies.

This point is supported by both examples of destinations that have poorly mismanaged increased numbers of Chinese arrivals, as well as others that have flourished without direct flight connections with China.

Picking up on the comments he recently made at the ROUTES conference, Prof. Arlt emphasises: “since airports cannot relocate, it is crucial that their management cooperate with the destination’s local tourism providers in order to develop and maintain a good level of service quality for Chinese arrivals, as well as developing special interest products that attract high-level spenders, who will also serve as customers for their duty-free shops.”
