COTRI Director Pr. Dr. Wolfgang Arlt has published a new article entitled “3,000 Chinese Tourists Visit Rio’s Olympic Games Despite Government Warning” on his blog at Forbes.com.
Coinciding with the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the article discusses safety issues related to Chinese travellers to the games in Brazil.
In anticipation of potential troubles at the event, the Chinese authorities sent a police officer to the country two months before the games in order to coordinate security between local enforcement and Chinese visitors. Furthermore, a few days before the opening ceremony, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a safety warning to its citizens travelling to Rio advising them to leave their valuables in the hotel rooms, not to carry backpacks and to avoid using mobile phones in public unless necessary.
Nevertheless, there have been a number of incidents involving Chinese nationals in Rio, even including a number of high-profile robberies involving its athletes. This have been compounded by other complaints ranging from substandard accommodation in the Olympic Village, to even the flying of an “incorrect” Chinese flag at events.
However, as the article reports, this has not stopped as many as 3,000 Chinese fans making the 30 hour flight to Brazil, approximately 2,000 fewer than those that travelled to the World Cup two years ago – an event in which the Chinese national team did not even qualify for.
