Professor Wolfgang Georg Arlt of COTRI China Outbound Tourism Research Institute recently published an article about a new phenonemon called Chinese modular travelers on his Forbes blog. Modular travelers in China is a relatively new concept which is already altering the consumption patterns of Chinese tourists. Instead of following rigid tourist groups, more and more Chinese travelers, especially young people, tend to plan their own trips and gain unique experiences. This gives rise to specialized online platforms, which can organize parts of the trip (like booking tickets for an opera show) while guaranteeing freedom of choice for the traveler as to what exactly to do while travelling abroad.
This new pattern enables the individual traveler to travel independently while securing unique travel experiences. Travel agencies provide them with a large selection of experiences, and they can pre-purchased and combined freely by the traveller. In this way, travel agencies from outside of China can establish direct contact with Chinese customers without going through a series of intermediaries, which means that the Chinese tourism market has never been more accessible to foreign companies offering services and experiences to tourists. For all the insights, please refer to Professor Arlt’s blog on Forbes.
