Vietnam launches biggest ever promotional campaign in China

In response to falling arrival numbers from China following last year’s tensions in the South China Sea, Vietnam has now launched its biggest ever promotional campaign for inbound tourism from China. Despite Chinese visitors representing a quarter of Vietnam’s foreign arrivals, the numbers for the first ten months of this year show a 15 percent decrease year-over-year, a trend the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) is now trying to counter.

The promotional campaign includes a series of events in China that gather Chinese travel agencies to promote tourism in Vietnam. Vietnam has several popular tourist destinations among Chinese customers, including historically significant Ho Chi Minh City, and popular beach destinations such as Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Phu Quoc, not to mention Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its traditional architecture and Chinese temples.

With many direct flight connections between China and Vietnam already in place, emphasis is being put on promoting Vietnam’s many tourist attractions and appeal among Chinese tourists rather than focusing on expanded travel connections. Another important aspect is that Vietnam is trying to appeal to a wealthier segment of the Chinese market, promoting arrivals by air and cruise ships in place of land border crossings for budget trips. Nguyen Van Tuan, director of VNAT describe Vietnam as seeing “a new wave of tourists coming to Vietnam”, with Chinese tourism to Vietnam fully recovering in 2016.
