Mexico’s unique tourist destinations, such as the ruins of ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations, and its landscapes, spanning from the tropical beaches of Cancun to the Copper Canyon of Chihuahua, drew over 29 million international tourists to Mexico in 2014, of which approximately 76,000 are Chinese – up 58.3 percent from 2012 to 2014.

As the Chinese start flocking into the country, the government is encouraging specific services for Chinese travellers. The policy is to increase the number of Chinese speaking tourist guides, streamline the visa application process (Mexico already does not require entry permits for Chinese visitors with valid US visas) and promote Chinese food options at major tourist attractions.

Manuel Russek Valles, Secretary of Economy of the Chihuahua State (Mexico) has set grounds to attract Chinese tourists in the very short term with an ambitious tourism strategy based on showcasing the product and fam trips.

The authorities have received a group of representatives of Chinese tour operators interested in the Barrancas del Cobre region and Sierra Tarahumara with the objective of starting promotion in Asia.

They had the opportunity to show the infrastructure and the hotel capacity, and said that ‘we also need to know their habits and what they need’.

COTRI, the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute, directed by Professor Arlt, can provide fast and reliable answers to smaller research and consultancy questions. Contact COTRI for further information.
