Find out COTRI’s selection of 10 destinations the Chinese are just discovering: PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH COUNTRY
4. Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Although mostly a domestic tourist destination, the international arrivals to the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, home to major tourist attractions such as Lancaster County’s Amish country, are growing. They have traditionally seen Canadian tourists followed by Europeans.
But Chinese tourism to the US grows, and Lancaster wants to eye those who come for the second or third time. “You’re just seeing an emerging Chinese market, so I would say you’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg,” said Mark Andrews, manager at Amish Farm and House.
Lancasteronline.com informs that, in addition, the amount of money Chinese visitors spend in the area has increased dramatically – They jumped to No. 2 by 2011, and are second only to Canadians. By last year, Chinese tourists spent more than $1 million on Visa credit cards.
